Reach for the Stars

Poster

IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT 80% OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD HAVE NEVER SEEN THE MILKY WAY.

In some areas of the world, the growth of light pollution exceeds 7% per year. This adds up to a doubling of light pollution every 10 years. This poster explores the topic of light pollution and the negative effect it has on human health, the environment, and the animals living in it. The map depicts the levels of light pollution in Canada using data gathered from existing light pollution maps. Each triangle on the map was filled in individually, using screenshots of a light pollution map placed underneath as reference. On the left in the graph underneath the map, is data depicting the amount of electricity each province dedicates to lighting street lamps. Reading from the right, data is shown in the form of a bar graph. The green depicts the percent in which the population increased from 2006 to 2011. The blue displays population density in square kilometers. I also included a small section about stars and data on where and when it is best to see the constellations they form.
